Lavender Field of Dreams

Lavender Field of Dreams

 June 16, 2022

At Baisch and Skinner, we’re best known for our extensive variety of fresh cut flowers. We have flowers shipped to us from all over the world from over a hundred different vendors. There is one fresh cut product, however, we’re extremely proud to carry and it comes from just a few miles away.

When the season is right, and it’s time to harvest, some of our best lavender comes from the Seeds of Grace Lavender Farm organized by the College Hill Foundation. The garden first started in 2018 with its first harvest in 2019. The goal was to turn a once grim vacant lot into something that could bring both jobs and a sense of pride to its community.

“As a fifth generation resident of  College Hill, I have witnessed a lot of change, most of it disheartening. However, the ongoing work being done by the College Hill Foundation,  such as the playground and lavender garden, and the new homes built by Lutheran Housing Support have provided a wealth of hope!”

 - Teri Rose, College Hill Resident

This year we’re bringing in over 700 bundles of this beautiful locally grown product. So by purchasing this particular item, you’ll be giving back and helping support our local community.

The word lavender comes from the Latin root “lavare,” which literally means “to wash.” It’s a flowering plant in the mint family that's easily identified by its sweet floral scent. The earliest recorded use of lavender dates back to ancient Egypt where its oil played a role in the mummification process. Today, it’s claimed to have certain health benefits, helping cure ailments such as insomnia, headaches, acne and burns.
